Five foods which are surprisingly good for you

When ordering food or heading to a grocery store, many of us will choose the low-fat option or look for foods containing lower calories. Though, what if the foods we are avoiding may actually be good for our health?

Here are just five foods that are surprisingly good for the body.

  1. Potatoes

Although potatoes have been perceived as a food containing high amounts of carbs, they are actually relatively low in calories (particularly red potatoes) and packed with fatburning carbohydrates.

  1. Red wine

This is a win for many wine lovers out there – red wine can actually be good for you. According to the experts at House Call Doctor, moderate amounts of red wine can have many health benefits including raising good cholesterol levels and helping to prevent blood clots in arteries. As well as this, red wine is also said to be rich in antioxidants.

  1. Cheese

Another food which we are usually told to avoid is cheese, when in fact cheese can help prevent tooth decay. Along with this, it is high in zinc, calcium and helps maintain healthy skin, bones and teeth.

  1. Pork
Although pork has been known to be full of sodium, it can be as healthy as other meats, including chicken. A fresh piece of pork in fact has plenty of vitamin B which can help lower your cholesterol levels. With this being said, it is still advised to avoid fried pork such as bacon and ham as they contain high levels of fat.
  2. Whole milk

Lastly, we have all been guilty of grabbing the low-fat milk when at the grocery store, thinking it is better for us than whole milk. Though, maybe next time it might be worth grabbing the whole milk option instead. Whole milk contains high levels of vitamins A and D, and if consumed in moderation, has only a few extra calories.
