Promethazine hydrochloride also has antiemetic and sedative properties, therefore this medication can also be used to help with these conditions : 

  • Motion sickness
  • Nausea and vomiting 
  • Insomnia 

The recommended dosage of Mucoprom is as follows : 

  1. Adults: 15ml taken 3 times a day 
  2. Children between 2-5 years of age: 2.5-5ml, 4 times a day 
  3. Children between 6-12 years of age: 7.5ml-12.5ml, 3 times a day
  4. Children above 12 years: 12.5-15ml, 3 times a day

However, these are just general guidelines and you should always follow the packaging instructions. When in doubt, always seek advice from a doctor or a pharmacist to prevent any adverse effects. 

What are the side effects of Mucoprom? 

Mucoprom syrup is considered a safe medication, rarely causing serious side effects with its usage. Nonetheless, as with any drug, side effects can still occur for some people. 

Common side effects include : 

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Restlessness 
  • Headache 
  • Fatigue 
  • Disorientation 
  • Photosensitivity 
  • Nausea 
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort 
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding 
  • Diarrhea / Constipation 
  • Blurred vision 
  • Dry mouth 
  • Urinary retention 
  • Skin rashes, urticaria, and pruritus

Note that these side effects are more frequently seen in patients on long-term therapy with this medication. If they do occur, it is usually not a cause of concern as they resolve on their own in time. Even so, if symptoms persist, you should immediately stop the medication and consult a doctor for further advice. If anaphylaxis occurs, you should seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of anaphylaxis are difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face and throat, wheezing, and tachycardia. 

As this medication can cause drowsiness or dizziness, it is advisable to not drive or operate heavy machinery while on it. Use of alcohol in conjunction with Mucoprom is also not recommended as it can potentiate the effect of drowsiness and dizziness. This medication may not be suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Hence, it should only be used when necessary under the supervision of a doctor. Mucoprom syrup should never be given to children below the age of 2 and to those with a history of active peptic ulcer disease. Other contraindications include a history of allergy or hypersensitivity reaction with carbocisteine, promethazine hydrochloride, or other listed excipients. 

All in all, this chocolate vanilla-flavored Mucoprom syrup is the go-to medicine for managing cough and upper respiratory tract symptoms at home. Keep in mind that this medicine is not indicated as a treatment for your condition, it is merely to manage symptoms caused by your condition.
